Recreation League FAQs

What age are recreation players?

Players 4-12 are invited to register.  SYSA combines age groups based on registration numbers. Age groups are determined by the player’s age on August 1st (with the "U" meaning "Under").

When and where will my child practice and play games?

The Fall 2013 SYSA recreation league will play Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30-6:30, at Camp Living Water from September 12-October 29.  Camp Living Water is at 1510 W. Deep Creek Rd, Bryson City, NC 28713. Games will be played later in the season during the practice times on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

What is the cost?

Registration for the recreation league is $50. Financial aid is available.  Please contact the Director of Recreation.

How are teams selected?

Teams are coed and are selected randomly based on information from spring evaluations. While friends often want to play together, everyone will have a better experience if teams are balanced. Your coach will contact you before the first practice to give you your team assignment or you can come to the SYSA table at the field.

Can I coach a Recreation team?

Recreational soccer leagues depend on volunteer coaches! SYSA provides training and a practice curriculum for coaches to ensure your coaching experience is successful and rewarding.  All coaches are required to register with NCYSA and NCYSA requires a mandatory background check. Check the box on the registration forms if you would like to volunteer and SYSA will contact you.

What equipment does my child need?

Each player will get a team t-shirt for games that they can keep at the end of the season. All players must have shin guards to play and practice. Soccer cleats are optional, but recommended.  SYSA and Camp Living Water have some used cleats available.  Shin guards can be purchased at Walmart or anywhere that sporting equipment is sold.  We recommend the purchase of an age appropriate size ball.  Each player should bring water to games and practices.

U5 through U8 – size 3
U9 through U12 – size 4

Can my child play up/down from their age group?

For the safety and enjoyment of all of our participants, players are not allowed to play up more than one year without approval from the Director of our Recreation Program.  Please be aware, NCYSA regulations prohibit children from playing in age groups younger than their true age.

Are there referees?

Most games will not have referees. Coaches or a volunteer will share referee responsibilities. SYSA will recruit referees for the season.

What is the code of conduct?

SYSA has a code of conduct for players, parents, and coaches. You can review the codes here.

How will I know if games are cancelled due to weather?

Weather conditions can change quickly in the mountains. SYSA will make every effort to post weather announcements on practice/game day by 3:00 PM.  Notices will be posted on SYSA’s Facebook page and coaches will text or call players.  Please be aware that coaches or the Recreation director may have to cancel at the field as the weather changes.

My child loves soccer – what is the next step in their soccer development?

SYSA offers travel teams for players who want to improve their skills and play in a more competitive environment. See Programs.
